| Everybody may need to do a criminal record check on somebody, someday. We like to think about our country, our town, and our community as relatively safe places. For most people out there, they are good people, but there are still people out there that are shady and have criminal tendencies. The fact is that there are millions of Americans that are currently in some form of the criminal system for violating some sort of law. That’s not to say that they’re all in jail, but they could be on probation, parole and even in rehab. This is something that should worry you and make you interested in criminal record checks. All crime can be broken down into three specific categories: Felony, Misdemeanor and Traffic. Traffic violations aren’t typically something that we view as criminal. Technically it is from a government stand point, outside the cases that involve DUI and negligent uses of a vehicle. Normally this type of infraction won’t show up on your record. Having something like a speeding ticket isn’t that big of a deal. Misdemeanors are what I like to call light crimes. They typically are crimes that have maximum sentence of 1 year. Often you might not even go to jail. Despite that this will show up on your record. Felonies are the most serious types of criminal activity. These are the crimes that land you in jail for many years and all the way up to life in prison (or death penalty in applicable states). This type of criminal activity will be on your record, but the record will also be posted as a crime alert and notice for others to see. The legal system provides many different types of criminal record checks: theft, assault, arrest, driving, sex offender, etc. Depending on the type of information you need to know, you can have a record customized in the way you need it. All of this is public record for people to view. For example, if you were hiring someone to work with children, you’d definitely get a sex offender record to make sure they’re not a sexual predator. It’s just common sense. There are many approaches to doing a criminal record check. You can always go to the correct public offices or police departments, you can do this sort of thing by mail, or you have the option of using the internet. There are pros and cons both ways. For example, going in person is obviously going to get you the most information, but you have a lot more red tape to go through. The internet offers the best option from a practicality stand point. Doing your criminal record check online you don’t have to worry about things like lines or office hours. It’s something that you can access any hour of the day. Typically you’ll need to know the person’s first and last name, as well as the state they live in. This is the bare minimum of what you should be providing, but obviously if you provide more information you will have a much better chance of finding the exact person.
